about

I actually attempted to play a few different songs. ‘Matchbox Blues’ by Blind Lemon Jefferson was an early option. I listened to a fair amount of music from Billie Holiday, Bessie Smith and Ma’ Rainey. I even started working up ‘Black Eye Blues’ by Ma’ Rainey before settling on ‘Stack O’Lee Blues.’ I believe I’ve followed the original fairly closely albeit with solo guitar with a more country blues vibe. Lyrically, I stayed strictly to the original lyric with the exception of changing the refrain from, “He was my man, but he done me wrong” to “He was her man, but he done her wrong.” A minor change and an obvious one, I think.

lyrics

Stack O'Lee was a bad man, everybody knows
And when they see Stack O'Lee comin', they'd give him the road
He was her man, but he done her wrong

Stack O'Lee, Stack O'Lee was short-tempered and bad
He'd take everything his women would bring, and everything they had
He was her man, but he done her wrong

Stack O'Lee's on the warpath, and you'd better run
'Cause Stack O'Lee, oh he’s a bad man and he'll kill you just for fun
He was her man, but he done her wrong

Stack O'Lee's in jail now with his face turned to the wall
Pretty women and corn whiskey was the cause of it all
He was her man, but he done her wrong

A hundred-dollar coffin and a eighty-dollar hat
Carriеd him to the cemetery but they did not bring him back
He was her man, but he done her wrong
